3.OECD and the world economy - resumed debate

Speakers:

Mr Hadjidemetriou (Cyprus)
Mrs Squarcialupi (Italy)
Mr Zeynalov (Azerbaijan)
Mrs Degn (Denmark)

THE PRESIDENT (Translation).- The chairman of the committee wants to speak. I call Mrs Degn.

Mrs DEGN (Denmark).- Thank you. First, I congratulate Mr Townend, our rapporteur, on his work. He always managed to provoke interesting and stimulating debate in our committee. If you have listened carefully today, you will have realised that he does that outside the committee, too.

As we all know, it takes two to tango, and in our committee some of us were ready to dance. All partners showed up and did the waltz with Mr Townend. To me, it looked as though everyone in our committee enjoyed yesterday's dancing, including our overseas guests from Mexico, Japan, Republic of Korea and Canada. Everyone joined in with our waltz and argued elegantly. I commend our guests, who were so well prepared for that meeting and for this debate. They widened our perspective.

I want to mention paragraph 16, which refers to cyber-terrorism. I would point out to the Assembly that globalisation has widened and improved our report. There was another contribution from our friends overseas: the OECD was also asked to report back to us after looking at our report, to make comments and to make constructive arguments in writing. In paragraph 19, our Mexican colleague included a reference to the necessary dialogue with the non-aligned countries, which was very useful.

I thank Mr Johnston for being with us here today and for always being willing to debate with us. We are very pleased about that. We would like to share with you the governmental side of your work and put forward our views on that work. I thank colleagues who have joined in the debate. You really deserve our respect and thanks for sharing your views with us. In committee and in the plenary Assembly, we have had an excellent debate.
